At our meeting today, we met with Kari Hatch, president of Friends of Oakland Public School Libraries. We talked about the importance of advocating for libraries and how we can make change in our own school.
On Wednesday, December 6th, we were interviewed by Lisa Fernandez, a KTVU reporter. They are doing a story about budget cuts and the importance of libraries to schools. Four members of our club were interviewed. We talked about the necessity of libraries and the crucial role that they can play in a students life.
Students for Library Improvement of Oakland Technical High School is a student club, to improve our school library which we hope to make into a safe, fun, supportive, and accessible environment for students to advance academically and build community. Currently, the library fails to serve the community of Oakland Tech with inaccessible to books (no check-out system in place), no librarian, out-of-date books, no system of organization in place, and an overall dysfunctional facility. We hope to change this and positively impact our school community.
